Differentiating Instruction

Approaches to differentiating instruction may include:

  • scaffolding student learning with additional support

  • modelling skills

  • explicit instruction and questioning students on the instructions to ensure understanding

  • identifying key vocabulary

  • using personal and situational interests to increase motivation

  • providing opportunities for the students to verbalise thinking

  • providing feedback

  • addressing misconceptions

  • allowing alternative representations of learning

  • providing opportunities for the student to work at a faster pace (acceleration, compacting), at greater breadth (enrichment) and in more depth (extension)

  • ongoing formative assessment that details exactly what students are doing well and what they need to do next to improve.
